Attorney General Pam Bondi is ordering federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione if he is convicted of the murder in December of the CEO of United of United Brian Thompson, he announced in a statement on Tuesday.
One of the federal charges against Mangione, murder by using a firearm, makes it eligible for the death penalty if it is convicted.
“Brian Thompson’s Mangione murder, an innocent man and father of two young children, was a premeditated and cold blood murder that shocked the United States,” Bondi said in a statement. “After a careful consideration, I have ordered federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out the Trump President Trump to stop violent crime and make the United States be safe again.”

Mangione is accused of killing Thompson outside a Hilton hotel in the center of Manhattan while the CEO was heading to an investor conference on December 4. He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the murder.
Mangione declared himself innocent of state charges.
He has not presented a plea to federal charges. He will return in the Federal Court on April 18.
